A proper cleaning routine includes a rest period between flocks to allow harmful bacteria and viruses to die off before new birds arrive. Follow these steps to clean a poultry house effectively.
Steps for Cleaning a Poultry House
1. Remove All Birds and Equipment
- Transfer birds to a safe area or sell them if the cycle is complete.
- Take out feeders, drinkers, nests, and any other movable equipment.
2. Remove All Litter and Waste
- Sweep and scrape out all manure, bedding, feathers, and dust.
- Properly dispose of old litter away from the poultry house to prevent contamination.
3. Wash and Scrub the House
- Use water and detergent to scrub walls, floors, and equipment. Make sure to follow the directions on the detergent carefully.
- Pay special attention to corners and cracks where dirt and germs collect.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Always wash from the top down towards the floor.
4. Disinfect the Poultry House and Equipment
- Use a recommended disinfectant to spray all surfaces, including the floor, walls, and ceiling.
- Soak drinkers and feeders in disinfectant, then rinse well with clean water.
- Let everything dry completely before setting up again.
5. Allow a Rest Period of At Least 2 Weeks
- Keep the poultry house empty and well-ventilated.

6. Prepare for the Next Flock
- Spread fresh, dry bedding such as wood shavings or straw.
- Disinfect and return feeders, drinkers, and other equipment.
- Ensure proper ventilation and temperature control before introducing new birds.
